How the Iowa Democratic Party can regain relevance

Face it: the Iowa Democratic Party is irrelevant. Beyond losing national influence due to the demise of the Iowa Caucuses, Iowa Democrats have almost zero power to affect public policy at the state level.

In case you disagree, here’s a quick reminder:

— All six of Iowa’s members of Congress are Republican.

— Only one Democrat holds statewide office, Auditor Rob Sand, who barely won re-election in 2022 against a little-known, poorly-funded opponent.

— Democrats in the Iowa House dropped from 47 seats six years ago to 33 today. In the Iowa Senate, Democrats hold a mere 15 seats, down from 19 seats six years ago.

— Democrats account for 29.2% of registered voters, down from 34.5% in 2008 when Democrats held the state government trifecta.

Anybody want to argue that this isn’t the very definition of irrelevance? I’m up for that argument. If the Democratic Party doesn’t undergo a radical transformation, permanent minority-party status is practically guaranteed.

But there is a path back to relevance, one that could lead to parity with Republicans by the end of the decade, and perhaps even majority party status in the years to come. Continue Reading →

An interview with State Auditor Rob Sand

As Auditor, Sand goes after fiscal mismanagement — willful or otherwise. During his five years in that office, Sand’s work has included tackling problems Reynolds would rather not see publicly exposed.

It’s safe to say Sand is Reynolds’ primary political nemesis. And that’s a darn good thing, since Reynolds, not content with the current checks on her power, seems intent on consolidating control and becoming Dictator of Iowa. Other than Auditor Sand, there’s not a whole lot standing in her way.

Fortunately, Sand’s not going away. He’s done such a fine job as Auditor that Reynolds corralled her posse at the Statehouse to pass a bill severely restricting the Auditor’s power. The bill was so bad a bipartisan assortment of auditors, CPAs, and fiscal watchdogs across the US condemned it. Continue Reading →

Solutions to Iowa’s “red-state” problem

I first met Dennis Kucinich in 2003 when he ran for president. Unlike most politicians, when Dennis took a position on an issue, you knew exactly where he stood. There was no equivocation, no weighing of political nuances, no corporate donors to appease. Refreshing and, alas, rare.

I hope you’ll listen to my discussion with Dennis, which covers the sorry state of the Democratic Party, the Biden administration’s misguided foreign policy, and how “free” trade treaties have eroded the economic foundation of our country.

Here’s a quote from my interview with Dennis: “The Democratic Party used to stand for the small farmers trying to resist monopolies. Now you have agribusinesses that don’t give a damn about the soil, and we see taxpayers’ money helping facilitate the destruction of millions of acres of farmland to create shopping malls for the purpose of marketing goods from China.”

Rob Sand bucks trend in Iowa election

Congratulations to Iowa Auditor Rob Sand! After recounts in Warren and Des Moines counties today, Rob was declared the winner. (Congrats also to Rob for bagging a nine-point buck today.)

Rob’s victory is one of the few bright spots for Iowa Democrats this week. Incumbents Cindy Axne, Tom Miller, and Mike Fitzgerald all lost. Challengers to Governor Reynolds and Senator Grassley got their clocks cleaned. Democrats lost seats in both the Iowa House and Senate.

Iowa is now redder than Mississippi and Alabama. In fact, among states with four or more congressional districts, Iowa is tied for first in redness with Utah, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.

Let that sink in: IOWA IS REDDER THAN ALABAMA! Continue Reading →

Joel Kurtinitis: Columnist, Trump voter

Iowans heard the lies over and over again during the DAPL fight. Once again, Big Oil can’t seem to tell the truth. The polar vortex had barely wrapped up its historic disruption of Texas’ power grid when fossil fuel’s spin room revealed the culprit: Windmills! Continue Reading →
