Man watches Trump speech, needs counseling

Dear Friends,

So, I’m watching Trump’s convention speech yesterday (bad idea) on my laptop over lunch (an even worse idea) when, halfway through, I find myself searching on my phone for information on how become an Irish citizen. Then I find myself googling “parallels between the rise of Hitler and Trump.”

Can this egomaniac’s crazy-talk truly have brought him this close to the presidency of the United States of America?

After watching Trump’s speech, I needed a hug. (Where were you?!) Or maybe ice cream. At this point, I’ll settle for counseling. And for that, I would greatly appreciate your help. Specifically . . .

Call-in to the Fallon Forum today from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon at (515) 528-8122, assure me and Charles that everything’s going to be alright, or in lieu of that, tell us what we need to do to stop Trump.

Dem Party caller doesn’t get customer service

Dear Friends,

Before I tell you about two important events coming up, I gotta share this absolutely true phone call I received last week from a guy with the Iowa Democratic Party:

“May I speak with Edward please?”

A caller asking for “Edward” is never a good sign. “This is Ed, ” I respond.

“Would you be able to volunteer to help our candidates on the south side this weekend?”

“No.”

“Would you be able to volunteer sometime this fall leading up to the election?”

“No.”

“Are you going to vote for all the Democrats on the ticket this fall?”

“No.”

“Can you tell me which Democrats you are going to vote for?”

“No.”

“Well, thanks for wasting my time.” Hangs up.

Wow! I was trying to help him with time management by giving short, concise answers. No gratitude at all. Of the many things the Democratic Party is doing wrong these days, you can add “poor customer service” to the list.

Anyway, two big events are happening in the next few days. I would love to see you at both of them. And stay tuned for more developments with the Pledge of Resistance, as Dakota Access has begun construction on the Bakken Pipeline in a few places in Iowa.

  • On Saturday, July 23 at 11:00 in front of the Federal Building, 210 Walnut Street in Des Moines, Lakota and Dakota youth on a 2,000-mile relay run to Washington, D.C. will hold a rally and protest to challenge President Obama and the Army Corps of Engineers to take action to stop the Bakken Pipeline. (See their promotional video here.)
  • Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement and Bold Iowa are encouraging members, allies and supporters to attend the condemnation hearing for the Higginbottom family on Monday, July 25 at 9:00 a.m. at the Polk County building at 2309 Euclid Avenue in Des Moines. When the hearing recesses at roughly 9:30-10:00, pipeline opponents and members of the Higginbottom family will hold a press conference outside the building.Writes Dan Higginbottom: “For my family, today’s hearing marks the final event resulting from the deplorable failure of government, at all levels, to protect the rights of property owners and to protect Iowa’s fragile environment. It is our firm belief that the condemnation of our property constitutes an illegal taking and that the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) does not possess the statutory authority to grant the power of eminent domain in this case. It is our sincere hope that the Courts will uphold property-owner rights in the suits pending before them.” Dan’s family has farmed the land targeted by Dakota Access for 50 years.

Native Youth Run to Stop Pipeline

Dear Friends,

Yesterday, I learned from sources in southeast Iowa that pipeline construction has started in Lee and Jefferson counties. This is a sad moment for Iowa. But after the Iowa Utilities Board ruling last month, we knew it was coming.

While sad, I’m hardly discouraged. We still have the court case brought by ten landowners over the illegal use of eminent domain. We still await the Army Corps of Engineers’ decision on issuing a permit.Run for Life 1

And remember: Construction was initiated on other pipelines elsewhere in the country (Keystone, Constitution, Palmetto) and they were defeated. Don’t give up! We can stop this!

Need more hope? On Friday, youth from the Standing Rock Sioux reservation will set-out on a 1,500-mile “Run for Our Water” to Washington, DC to protest the pipeline. They’ll cross Iowa from July 19 – 25, and they invite people to run with them, meet them, share a meal with them and hear their stories. They also need to borrow a couple of vans, if you have one to spare or would like to pay for one to be rented. For more information visit their Facebook Page or contact Bobbi Jean Three Legs at bobbi.jean@ocetisakowinyouth.com or Joseph White Eyes at joseph@ocetisakowinyouth.com.Lakota Youth Run

Need even more hope? Support for direct action to stop the pipeline continues to grow, with nearly 1,000 people signing the Pledge of Resistance! This is incredible and unprecedented. Thank you to those who have signed. If you haven’t, please read the Pledge and consider being part of what could be a truly historic moment.

It’s impossible to say exactly when or where direct action will occur, but it could be soon, and it could be anywhere in Iowa. I’ll keep you posted, and please visit the Bold Iowa Facebook Page for additional updates. Thanks again to Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement and CREDO Action for partnering with Bold Iowa to help circulate the Pledge.
