Dear Friends,
DRAKE PARK ORCHARD. Join Birds & Bees Urban Farm, Trees Forever, and the City of Des Moines Wednesday, October 29, 10:00-12:00 to plant 36 fruit trees at Drake Park. Kathy and I are pushing for this to be the first of many public orchards in Des Moines. REGISTER HERE.
MARCH! Join me Sunday, October 26, at noon at the Fareway in Norwalk for the final 10 miles of the Save America March. We’ll finish at Lua Brewing at 5:00. Please support our ongoing work to restore truth and sanity to the public airwaves. DONATE HERE. (We’ll have some of these t-shirts at Lua.)
THIS WEEK’S PROGRAM:
(01:36) Creston
(21:09) Afton
(40:52) Murray
(51:18) Osceola
Day Thirteen’s 18-mile trek is one of the most beautiful, yet also most challenging. I start out on the wrong foot, so to speak, with a silly mistake I’ve never made before.
I set out before sunrise. After a half mile, I notice the light of dawn beginning to color the … um … western sky.
“Why is the sun rising in the West today?,” I muse. I realize I’ve been heading the wrong direction, curse quietly (ok, maybe not so quietly), do an abrupt turn around, and concede that this particular stretch or road is pretty enough I need to walk it twice.
To those silly people who believe all Iowa is flat, I invite you to check out the rolling prairie of Union County — rolling and breathtaking. The photo at left doesn’t begin to do justice to southern Iowa’s splendor.
The day’s march is complicated by a 2:30 appointment I’ve made with a reporter in Murray. Around 1:00, I call to let her know I’ll be late. She tells me that won’t work since she has another appointment at 3:30. I glance at my phone’s map, which tells me I have 7.3 miles to go and will arrive at my destination at 3:24.
Yike! I don’t think I’ve ever walked 7.3 miles so quickly. I literally huff and puff my way up the hills, cut an hour off my projected ETA, and arrive in time for the meeting.
It’s been a good week for local media. I have interviews with the Creston News Advertiser, Afton Star Enterprise, and Osceola-Sentinel Tribune.
My overnight stop (with a delicious supper) is in Murray at the home of Joe Hynek and Annie Nawab. Their place doubles as the studio for Joe’s radio station, KSOI 91.9 FM.
Two radio geeks. We have a blast gabbing about the public airwaves and wonking-out on the fine points of broadcasting. Joe’s also a musician. He’s got an accordion sitting around (doesn’t everyone?), and his son, Zane, plays sax. It’s a fun evening filled with spontaneous musical combustion.
In addition to the informative conversations I have along the route, I’m so grateful for the overnight hospitality that keeps me fueled up and well rested for the next day’s effort.
Thank you for reading, listening, and taking action.
