If Nikki Haley needs a double, Kathy’s a contender

When Kathy’s dental hygienist told her she looked like Nikki Haley, I knew things were about to get interesting. The former theater major in Kathy gleefully rose to the challenge, and yeah, she pulls off a pretty decent Haley, don’t ya think?

What’s next after Iowa Supreme Court rules against six-week abortion ban

The Iowa Supreme Court’s split decision means that abortions in Iowa will remain legal up to twenty weeks. If the ruling had gone the other way, abortion would be illegal after six weeks — before many women even know they’re pregnant!

Undaunted, Governor Reynolds said after the ruling, “We are reviewing our options in preparation for continuing the fight.”

Charles and I discuss what those options might be …

I’ll leave you with an important caveat. The extent to which Republicans have gone to undermine the freedom of pregnant women has already landed the GOP a whole lot of political baggage. They’ll certainly keep pushing for even more draconian measures, in Iowa and across the country. Some of those measures may pass, and many people, especially mothers, will be hurt.

But the powerful can only go so far in negating personal freedom before the mass of people rise up and say, “Enough!” We’re already seeing that happen, and the groundswell for a restoration of sanity on abortion policy will only continue to build. Continue Reading →

Marijuana: Legalize it!

During my 38 years as a politician and activist, I’ve frequently been out of step with mainstream opinion on controversial issues. One of those is cannabis. After meeting Carl Olsen in 1992 during my first legislative campaign, I agreed to help push legislation to legalize marijuana.

Carl’s my guest on the first segment of this week’s program — and a veritable encyclopedia of weed wisdom. Carl has spent his adult life pushing to decriminalize marijuana. He understands the ins and outs of federal and state drug policy better than anyone I know.

With Carl’s guidance, in 1993 I was one of ten House members — nine Democrats and one Republican — who introduced HF 404. That bill would have authorized the lawful possession of marijuana for therapeutic purposes. Not surprisingly, in the Republican-controlled Iowa House, it went nowhere. Continue Reading →

Are you ready?

I make no apologies about focusing most of my attention on the climate emergency. That said, I try to approach the conversation with cautious optimism and a sense of humor, and I make sure to leave time for other important conversations. In my personal life, I make sure there is time for activities essential to maintaining and nurturing a healthy mind and body. Walking. Music. Friends. Bocce ball. Sleep. That sort of thing.

I hope all of you are able to find the same balance, even as you commit to doing your part in the greatest challenge humanity has ever faced — a challenge, alas, brought on by our own greed and ignorance, or at least the greed and ignorance of a few powerful men and nations. Continue Reading →
