Census data a mixed bag

Dear Friends,

Click here for this week’s podcast. Here’s a brief overview of my conversations with co-host Charles Goldman:

IDENTITY POLITICS: “As long as Democrats and progressives define our political divisions as primarily racially based, they are playing right into Republicans’ hands.” — Charles Goldman

ARIZONA ELECTION SO-CALLED AUDIT: “Arizona is in the midst of a nonviolent overthrow in some way. It’s subtle, and not in people’s face, because it’s not happening with weapons. But it’s still a complete overthrow of democracy.” — Chad Campbell

GOOD CENSUS NEWS FOR DEMOCRATS: “Rural areas and white people’s share of the population shrank, while traditionally Democratic cities and increasingly Democratic suburbs grew.” — The New York Times

GOOD CENSUS NEWS FOR REPUBLICANS: “Republican-controlled legislatures will still get to redraw 187 maps, compared to Democrats’ 84.” — The New York Times

AFGHANISTAN: “Afghanistan is called the graveyard of empires (see Great Britain and Russia for details). President Biden realizes that, of all the US foreign policy fiascos, Afghanistan is the worst. Pulling out makes sense. But what happens next will depend on whether the Taliban resume a hard-line approach to governing or adopt a more moderate approach that doesn’t punish women for not having the appropriate headdress and men for not sporting long enough beards.” — Ed Fallon in response to a press enquiry from Sputnik News (Note: They didn’t print the part about Russia.)

THE IOWA STATE FAIR: Des Moines has been a naughty town for longer than most people realize. In his 1932 novel, State Fair, Phil Stong tantalizes readers with several tasty plot lines, including the conflict between Des Moines and rural Iowa as seen through the experiences of two farm kids who lose their virginity at the fair.

Yup. Des Moines. We bad. And you thought the State Fair was just about rides, animals, fattening foods on a stick, and presidential candidates.

— Ed Fallon
